uwmspeccoll:Decorative Floral Patterns by E. A. SeguyToday we are featuring a portfolio found in MilwaukeePublic Library’s Rare Book Room: French artist E. A. Séguy’s Bouquets etfrondaisons (flowers and foliage) portfolio of pochoirprints published in Paris by Charles Massin and in New York by Brentano’saround 1925. Émile-AllainSéguy, whose name is often abbreviated E. A. Seguy was a Frenchartist known for his ornamental patterns of plants and insects in Art Nouveauand Art Deco styles. The portfolios of colored plates were created using thelabor-intensive process of pochoirprinting, where each layer of color is applied by painting gouachethrough a stencil. The results are stunning!E. A. Seguy produced a number of decorative arts portfolios in the 1920s. Ifyou ever have a chance see one in person, I highly recommend it because thevibrancy of the plates is even more dazzling than how they appear online! Imade an appointment with our friends over at MilwaukeePublic Library’s Art, Music & Recreation Department to look atseveral of his portfolios, and plan to feature more designs in the future. Staytuned!View more posts about E. A. Séguy’s work.View more posts about pochoir printing!
