Geghard Monastery, Goght, Kotayk Province, Armenia by Feng Wei Photography Holy light shines into Geghard, a medieval monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, near Goght, in Kotayk province of Armenia. Geghard was founded in 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator, and is partially carved out of the adjacent mountain. The name of Geghard (Armenian: Գեղարդ, meaning “spear”) originates from the spear which had wounded Jesus at the Crucifixion, allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude, and stored amongst many other relics. © All rights reserved.
