A scale-model of the Karak-Pavilion… • A design inspired by various tea and coffee ceremonies (Japanese, Chinese, English tea ceremonies & rituals, Ethiopian/ Eritrean coffee ceremonies, and more) here emphasizing the intimate collective and social experience of coming together over the choreographed preparation of Karak… • The experience is also framed around a narrative engagement, during which stories/ anecdotes are told and poems are read… • The space would mainly be entered through two locations, indicated through the leveled paths that transcend the ridge-patterned floor. One path is intended for the Storyteller, the other would be used by the Partakers… • There are two peripheral layers of bead-curtains surrounding the volume. These would provide a degree of visual privacy and act as an auditory buffer, whilst allowing the breeze to enter the space. The inner ceiling cavity is also shaped like a (smaller) dome, which would carry sound/ voices across the space, but also provide an escape, through a cylindrical ceiling cavity, for the smoke from the fire pit. It would also perform as a secondary light source… • The pavilion can accommodate between 2 to 5 people (1 storyteller, and 1-4 partakes… • This rendition of the design would perform as a permanent architectural pavilion/ folly… • It would be made of stone (columns, floor), steel (structural frame), and GFRC (dome)… The two layers of bead curtains would be made of felt and resin… The central fire pit and seating would be made of CNC-milled stone. • The scale-model is made out of 3D printed white nylon, TPU, and plastic… • Part of the ongoing effort includes the design some of the utensils and paraphernalia that would be used in these ceremonies.
