The Webley Revolver,Designed by Webley and Scott in 1887, the Webley revolver would become the most popular British service pistol in history. A double action revolver, the Webley was the first British revolver with a brake open action in which the pistol broke open on a hinge, ejecting spent cartridge casings and allowing the user to load new cartridges. The cylinder itself held six shots in the caliber .455 Webley, similar in power to the .45 ACP. In 1887 the Webley became the standard service revolver of the British Army. Not only did the military like the design, but it was also adopted by police, and loved by civilians as well. Between 1887 and 1926 six Webley military models were produced, each with different improvements, upgrades, and calibers. For the most part they were issued to officers and NCO’s. They were especially common during World War I. Production ended in 1926, but the Webley remained the pistol of choice for the British military throughout World War II and the 1950’s as there were large stocks on hand in armories all over Britain. The old Webley was not retired from official service until 1963, when it was replaced with the Browning Hi-Power automatic pistol. -- source link
