The idea is hollowpoints expand, increase their surface area which causes them to lose energy quickly in the target and not penetrate very far. Extreme penetrators do not expand, dump very little (relatively) energy into the target and keep on truckin… sometimes right through the target.Some are designed to also impart rotational energy into the target as they pass through, but that’s getting into the weeds. -- source link
