left-reminders:shinvermouthea:2bpoliticallycurious:Please get your terminology right. Food stamps ISN’T “socialism.” It is a form of social welfare associated with social democracies. Socialism is “a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.”Democrats are NOT trying to dismantle capitalism to take over the means of production. Democrats aren’t socialists (even Bernie and AOC aren’t “socialists”–they aren’t even “democratic socialists”). Progressive Democrats are “social democrats” like you will find in Finland or Canada. PLEASE STOP USING THE TERM “SOCIALISM” AND START USING THE TERM “SOCIAL DEMOCRACY.” If we don’t get our terminology correct, we just feed into right-wing propaganda. WORDS MATTER–the Right is counting on us to be too lazy to get our terminology correct. i’m gonna guess that the commenter is a liberal who thinks not calling it socialism will win republicans over and not a socialist who wants to focus our energy on democratizing workplacesSocialism is good, actuallyWe should want to take over the means of production from the rapacious capitalists who control our lives. We should want an economic democracy that produces things for human need rather than for capitalist profit. We should want to expand our political horizons beyond the vanilla confines of liberalism. Social welfare is a good thing in the meantime, while capitalism is still around, but sooner or later we’re gonna have to reckon with major problems that capitalism will not be able to solve (climate change, mass unemployment caused by automation, etc). We need eco-socialist economic democracy to navigate those problems. -- source link
