SUNDAY FUNDAY- WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTHThis month, Sunday Funday examines depictions of historical women in children’s books and young adult literature. This week we present Sacajawea: The Story of Bird Woman and the Lewis and Clark Expedition by noted Abenaki author Joseph Bruchac who tells his story through alternating perspectives of Sacajawea and Clark. As an historical figure, Sacajawea,an important member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, is an example of a strong and influential woman changing history. “Sacajawea lived a life of turmoil and change. Then in 1804, the mysterious young Shoshone woman known as Bird Woman met Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Acting as interpreter, peacemaker, and guide, Sacajawea bravely embarked on an epic journey that altered history forever. Hear her extraordinary story, told by Sacajawea and by William Clark, in alternating chapters and including parts of Clark’s original diaries.“Joseph Bruchac, a poet, novelist, children’s book writer, performer, storyteller, and elder, is a Nulhegan Abenaki citizen. Our copy of Sacajawea is a first edition published in 2000 by Silver Whistle Publishing, an imprint of Harcourt Children’s Books, in San Diego. Bruchac started publishing in 1971 and in 1999 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas. With over 120 works published, Bruchac has received numerous awards and honors, including the American Book Award for Breaking Silence, the Horn Book honor for The Boy Who Lived with the Bears, the Scientific American Children’s Book Award for The Story of the Milky Way, the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award for Heart of a Chief, the Cherokee Nation Prose Award, the Hope S.
