echiromani:SallustianoDecorating the top of the famous Spanish Steps, this is one of the most visible obelisks in the city. It is a downsized first-century Roman copy of the Flaminio obelisk of Ramses II in the Piazza del Popolo. The hieroglyphs inscribed upon it are not legible as they are the result of unskilled Roman hands. It was found by the noble Ludovisi family and first moved to the Piazza of St. John Lateran in 1734. In 1789 it was erected in its present location by Pope Pius VI. -- source link
