The Phrasikleia Kore by Aristion of Paros, circa 550 BCE, Myrrhinous (modern Merenta) in Attica, Greece. Excavated in 1972.The inscription reads:Tomb of Phrasikleia.Kore (maiden) I must be calledevermore; instead of marriage,by the Gods thisname became my fateAristion of Paros made meThe polychromy was restored by analyzing pigment remaining on the marble surface of the statue. Experts believe the ornaments on the back of the dress may have been arranged to resemble the constellation Scorpus - but I wonder if they were intended to form Virgo, sometimes identified with Persephone.
