Dream Journey among Rivers and Mountains, no. 90, Cheng Zhengkui, 1658, Cleveland Museum of Art: Chinese ArtCheng Zhengkui depicted a series of “dream journeys” that were visionary landscapes that went beyond renderings of specific topographical sites. As ideal visions, they combined the artist’s memories and inner consciousness. “The wondrous part of this lies between the seemingly forgotten and remembered, between the apparent meeting and parting… . ,” Cheng commented. Such creative visions, nevertheless, also embraced art-historical knowledge as a source of inspiration. This particular scroll, for example, is apparently a theme-and-variations based on Huang Gongwang’s Surpassing View over Rivers and Hills.Size: Overall: 26 x 344.2 cm (10 ¼ x 135 ½ in.)Medium: handscroll, ink and color on paperhttps://clevelandart.org/art/1960.182 -- source link
