Suzanne Valadon was born Marie-Clémentine Valadon on the 23rd of September, 1865 in France. She began pursuing her interest in art after working in a variety of fields and jobs, one of which included being a trapeze artist in a circus. Initially she modeled for other artists at the age of fifteen and sought to observe and learn from them before going on to be an artist herself. Artists that she modeled for included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the latter of which gave her the nickname ‘Suzanne’. She mostly produced drawings from 1883 to 1893 and began painting in 1892. It is largely believed that she taught herself how to draw at the age of nine, as she was never formally trained and her art never tended to follow the trends and norms. She was the first woman painter to be admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1894. She died on the 7th of April, 1938.The painting above is called Nude on the Sofa and was completed in 1920. -- source link
