kedreeva: daughterofthestars: kedreeva:rairii:ruusverd:godesssiri:darkvioletcloud: sabelmouse: This fake yarn is supposedly better for sheep. Aimed at people who don’t know where wool comes from, it’s 100% plastic. Yes, plastic. So any garment you wash will release microfibres into the sea. It’ll never decompose. You’re supposed to believe that sheep shearing is violent and cruel. There are imbeciles out there that work in an unprofessional manner while shearing, but that’s not the case overall. Sheep don’t suffer from having their fleece removed. Left on, the fleece can become a home for fly eggs and the subsequent maggots which can eat the sheep. Chemical treatments are available to prevent that happening. It’s much better for the sheep, the land and the farmer to avoid chemical use. Don’t be fooled. Wool is a sustainable material, one we should make more and better use of. Any garment you wash will release microfibres into the sea. It’ll never decompose. This is very important. And you need to wash acrylic wool garment more often than natural wool. They get stinky way more easily. In my almost-decade of owning sheep, there have been exactly two(2) bad shearers try to start up in the area. Know what happened? The first farm they went to called every other shepherd in the area and said “This guy cut one of my sheep and didn’t think it was a big deal, don’t hire him.” And neither of them ever did business in the area again. Some farmers are less conscientious than they should be about taking care of their stock, and the occasional tiny nick will happen, but no one is going to hire a shearer who is a) incompetent enough and b) uncaring enough to actually injure the animals to the point of bleeding, let alone the kind of horrors the internet claims. Also, most breeds of sheep will literally die if they go too long without being sheared. PETA (and let’s face it, most of this anti-wool stuff can be traced back to deliberate misinformation from PETA) doesn’t care if sheep die, they have openly stated that they would prefer every domestic species that can no longer survive without humans go extinct rather than live in “"slavery.”“ Humans and sheep have lived together for over ten thousand years, they’ve been domesticated longer than dogs! Their lives consist of doing whatever the heck they want (for the most part they only want to walk, eat, sleep, play, and make lambs) while being fed and cared for, for the low price of having their hair cut once a year. Why would anyone boycott this natural, biodegradable fiber humans have been using for so long to the benefit of both species, in favor of plastics that are killing the planet?? Sometimes, I wonder if PETA just wants humanity to die out make no mistake, they do. they literally do. PETA is to animal care/animal rights what nihilism is to religion and politics. They do not care about people, they do not care about or want us to have domestic animals. They do not love animals and should be ignored/boycotted (because PETA loves attention and loves money). The biggest problem with PETA is they don’t believe there is any right or good or ethical way for a human to interact with or keep any kind of animal in their care. They don’t want ANY human contact for animals AT ALL. They don’t want you to take good care of your pet cat or dog, they want you to not have one AT ALL. They don’t want guidelines on tank space/size and feed and care for aquatic animals to improve, they want you to not have an aquarium AT ALL. They don’t want animal rescues to take in injured or ill animals, they want there to not be any rescues AT ALL. They don’t want zoos doing the massive amount of conservation work they do, they want zoos to not exist AT ALL. If they have a choice between an animal life and a human life, they will choose the animal life every time (unless it’s their own, and even then I’m not sure). If they could eradicate all humans and leave the planet to animals they genuinely would. If they could kill every animal in human possession, THEY WOULD, because to them an animal is better off dead than being in human care. And the problem is that… That’s not going to happen. But they function like it will. They take every opportunity they can, legal and often not, to try to bring that about. They’ve stolen people’s pets and euthanized them. They’ve broken into research facilities and stolen animals that are in no way suited for the outdoors and released them to watch them be eaten by wildlife. But it’s better because they aren’t in human care. There’s no grey area for them. And that’s the difference between an animal rights activist (ANY ARA, not just PETA) and an animal welfare advocate. An ARA hates humans and wants no animals to live in human care or interact with humans in any way- including ways beneficial to the animal, the human, or both. Animal welfare advocates want animals to be treated fairly and well while in our care, to the best of our ability. We should be seeking to provide good housing, correct nutrition, fresh water, good enrichment, and appropriate medical care for all of our animals (including use animals!). Animal welfare advocates are necessary and good for a society which has or uses animals to have. We should all advocate for the welfare of animals in our care. But PETA is an animal rights activist group which passes itself off as an animal welfare group to the main public, which is why it continues to get support. People don’t know there’s a difference. They even think they themselves are an ARA when they’re actually a welfare advocate, which muddies the water and serves to confuse the public further because they see welfare advocates advocating for welfare and calling themselves rights activists and they think that’s what it means and it doesn’t. But PETA wants you to think that’s what it means so you’ll give them money and they can keep doing horrific shit to animals under to guise of releasing them from human control.Keeping sheep for wool isn’t evil. Shearing sheep isn’t abusive or harmful, it’s a mutually beneficial action taken by humans. What should be advocated for is that humans caring for sheep provide them ample good grazing land and any nutritional supplementation they need, that the sheep always have access to clean water, that they’re provided with any enrichment they need, and that their medical needs are seen to quickly and effectively. What should be advocated for is that the shearing process not cause injury wherever possible (and that any injuries are treated quickly and well) and be done in the least stressful way possible. Maximizing care and minimizing harm, to the benefit of both species.PETA just wants them all dead. -- source link
