The Atacama desert bloomsEl Nino events are characterised by dry weather in Australia and India, and excess rain along the western coasts of the Americas, and whenever they happen one of the driest places on Earth gets an occasional soaking, though some areas have not received rain since records began. When this happens, a transformation follows, and millions of dormant seeds sprout and flower as fast as they can to use the bounty that has fallen from the sky. This year was no exception, and the Chilean desert will be flowery for the next few weeks, until they seed, die back and vanish into the duns and greys of its normal incarnation. This year’s rains were heavy, producing rivers of mud, some flooding and fatalities and the most spectacular overnight spring flowering event of the last 2 decades, with over 200 species recorded. By the end of next month, everything will look like the last photo again.LozImage credit: 1 Alamy, 2: Mario Ruiz/EPA, 3&4: Tomás Cuadra Ordeneshttp://bit.ly/1kgNtGGhttp://wapo.st/1LEu1gbhttp://bit.ly/1GAc97qhttp://bit.ly/1XCLYBf -- source link
