Giovanni della Robbia’s Resurrection of Christ was commissioned around 1520-24 by the Antinori family; a prosperous family of winemakers, silk merchants, and patrons of the arts who lived outside of Florence. Many symbols included in Della Robbia’s final sculpture allude to the family and their profession—Niccolo Antinori, the Antinori family crest, and grapes, which are associated with the Last Supper and the Antinori’s vineyard where this sculpture may have been originally displayed.
