The Old Man and the SeaJean-Jacques Savin, 71, has gone to sea in a large orange barrel that he designed and built himself. Departing from El Hierro in Spain’s Canary Islands on the 27th of December, 2018, Jean-Jaques took along a bottle of wine to celebrate his 72nd birthday on the 14th of January. Jean-Jaques hopes that his DIY sea vessel will eventually drift into the Caribbean, although the adventurous Frenchman is at the whim of the ocean as his barrel has no motor, rudder, or sails with which to steer. Ideally, Jean-Jaques will pitch up on a French island, as “That would be easier for the paperwork and for bringing the barrel back.”The barrel is equipped with all the supplies he will need for a many-months-long voyage and a GPS system that updates the website set up to track his progress. Along the way, Jean-Jaques is dropping sea markers for a marine observatory. This will be his 5th time crossing the Atlantic by sea, but his first time in a barrel. -- source link
