theauspolchronicles:The High Court ruled that the Palace Letters count as public not private records!!!OK so basically in 1975 the Governor-General dismissed Gough Whitlam and it was a HUGE THING because holy shit the GG can DO THAT? It’s referred to either as “the dismissal” or “1975 constitutional crisis.” Constitutional crisis indeed because if the GG can appoint ministers then what’s stopping him from dismissing them? Here’s the thing: we’ve never been entirely sure about what actually happened. On the face of it we have a general story BUT John Kerr sent a bunch of letters to the Queen discussing the issue. What input did the Queen have? How did these discussions shape this shocking historical moment of Australian politics?Well historian and political Jenny Hocking has been trying to find out for YEARS! She’s been fighting in court for 4 years trying to get the right to get access to the palace letters which otherwise may have been held away from public view indefinitely on the discretion of the monarchy.SO THIS IS REALLY COOL! This doesn’t necessarily mean the National Archives is going to display them openly but it does pave the way for the public to view them and Hocking expects to personally see them soon now that she’s won. So expect for her to write a book detailing what she’s learned about how this impacted the Dismissal and ended the Gough Whitlam government! -- source link
