We’re super excited to share this week’s feature! Although these pottery fragments have been in our collections since the 1950s, it wasn’t until last week that they were pieced together to reveal painted decorations, including a bison! Dr. Joe Tiffany has been working on analyzing pottery from the Phipps site in Cherokee County. When he joined these fragments together, it revealed a bison and traces of other figures. This is part of a large seed jar, with suspension holes drilled into the rim. It’s a Mill Creek culture vessel, which dates to about 1100-1200 A.D. The paint is likely a charcoal mixture. This rim sherd and other pottery samples are undergoing XRF analysis to help determine the composition (and possibly origin) of the materials the pots are made from. Stay tuned for those results! Please note, this image has been enhanced to make the bison easier to view. -- source link
