losing-euphoria:one-time-i-dreamt:I’m going to share with you the story behind this photo, because I personally think it is incredible and inspiring. This is my grandpa. He was born in Šibenik, Croatia, in a large family. They were poor, but happy. In Croatia, the term used for the kind of work they did is “težak”. It means farmer or a day laborer, but none of the English translations can explain the term 100% because it has a lot to do with our local tradition. His two elder brothers died (one from an illness as a child, the other was a sailor and he died at sea), so he became the eldest of five. A lot of responsibilities came with that. Grandpa was the best student in his high school, which was the best school in our town, and he also played an instrument, which he hadn’t touched since childhood, because his father broke it against his head, saying his dreams were useless. Before his last year of high school, his father also took him out of school to work full time. He was working for him all throughout elementary and high school, but his father wasn’t satisfied with just that, as he thought grandpa needed to do even more and stop wasting his time with education, hence why he did that. It was cruel and horrible. Grandpa loved school, he loved studying, he was great at everything, and he was extremely hard working. His head teacher even went to their family home to beg his father to let him stay and finish it, but great-grandfather was having none of it. On his last day of school, grandpa turned around, looked at his now former classmates and just said, “I’ll come back one day.” And he did. For seven years, he helped his family and he worked, he worked and he worked. He worked for his father, he worked on the side, he worked any job he could find, and he saved money. Finally, he had enough to go back to school, finish high school, and go to university. Med school. He put himself through med school in another, bigger town, all by himself. He continued working throughout the duration of his schooling, and he graduated with greatest honors. This photo was taken after he graduated. He paid for a photoshoot himself, he wanted to remember that day. He went to a photo studio in a suit, brought a bouquet and said that he wanted to have his picture taken like that. So he did. Some people teased him about his vanity for that, but he didn’t care about it. He was a doctor now. He worked hard and made his dreams come true. Everyone could tease him all they want, it wasn’t important. He had made it.As an aspiring nursing student with absolutely nothing, I needed this I just told my grandpa about you and read him your comment and he told me to tell you he believes in you and if he could do it, then so can you! -- source link
