September 5 is the birthday of Date Masamune. This is a statue of Date Masamune that was set on top of a mailbox. Date Masamune (1567-1636) was a samurai warlord of Mutsu province (present-day Miyagi prefecture etc.) who lived from the Sengoku period (or Warring States period from mid-15th to early 17th century) to the early Edo period. This statue was placed on top of the mailbox located in front of the Sendai City Hall in the center of Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture. It was built in 1999 to commemorate Sendai’s population exceeding 1 million people. All statues and portraits of Masamune have two eyes according to his wish described in his will. This statue also has both eyes open. There are many Masamune-themed items hidden not just around Sendai castle but throughout Sendai city. Be sure to look for them when you visit the city!
