christinamused:heyteach:Can we please talk about how Rock Lee is a perfect metaphor for learning disability? He had no god given talent for ninjutsu or genjutsu (ninja magic if you’re not familiar with Naruto) and was mocked mercilessly by his peers. He could have given up. He could have let himself be defined by what he was unable to do. But instead he was determined to become a splendid ninja through taijutsu (hand-to-hand combat) alone. Think about your students with learning disability - just the name learning disability denotes a lack of ability. Seek out your students’ strengths and imagine what they might be capable of.And all it took was one teacher to see his potential, to push him to his limit, and god damn it he became one of the strongest ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village. You could be that teacher! He walked around with FREAKIN’ WEIGHTS ATTACHED TO HIS ARMS AND LEGS ALL THE TIME. Your students with learning disability carry their own baggage. You know what that did to Rock Lee? It made him strong. Teach your students to find strength in their struggle. Teach your students about examples of successful people with learning disability; Richard Branson, John Lennon, Steven Spielberg, Scott Adams…Rock Lee shows us that you don’t have to be like everyone else to be strong. You have to have grit and determination! My son, who has Asperger’s, absolutely fell head over heels for this character. I was happy to make him a Rock Lee costume for Halloween a few years ago. It has made me more aware of watching for these kids in my class. -- source link
