cma-european-art: Portrait of a Youth as Saint Sebastian, Marco d'Oggiono , late 1480s, Cleveland Museum of Art: European Painting and SculptureCourt painter to the Duke of Milan, Ambrogio de Predis worked closely with Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), a connection that comes through in the muted tones and the smoky shadows (called sfumato). Chief bodyguard for the Roman emperor Diocletian, Sebastian was shot with multiple arrows and eventually drowned for converting prisoners to Christianity. While the arrow identifies the young man as Saint Sebastian, the clothing dates to the late 1400s. This work is thus a contemporary portrait, rather than an image of the historical saint.Size: Framed: 47.5 x 41 x 4 cm (18 11/16 x 16 1/8 x 1 9/16 in.); Unframed: 30.5 x 24 cm (12 x 9 7/16 in.)Medium: oil on wood, transferred to pressed woodhttps://clevelandart.org/art/1986.9 -- source link
