Someone needed to remind him that a balance between brevity and detail is the key.OK- Play it out. Let’s say he has his talk and gets his feelings and intentions out, to Beckett and then hears Beckett’s inadvertent confession. What happens next?If he’s laying it out there, honestly? I think she’d have come clean before he overheard. That happened the next day, and she opens her mouth to say something at one point.99% of Castle’s issue was that he felt the lie meant she didn’t love him back. If she had told him herself in the context of the real reason, that she does have feelings for him and got scared, I think it hurts, but he’d get it.I wonder if they’d have ended up together sooner, just to have HIS secret and the Always fight be the big issue?I think Castle’s secret is way worse, though, if she has already confessed hers. Taken in the context of, “I love you, I have information that is pertinent to you, I am not sure how to handle it,” it is a forgivable omission, especially when paralleled with identical reasoning on Kate’s part. But once she comes clean, explains why she hid the truth, his continued secret becomes very paternalistic and is a bigger betrayal, especially since at the time of this episode her mother’s case was mostly dormant. Not necessarily an unforgivable act on Castle’s part, but harder for Kate to bounce back from, I think. Which is why it was done the way it was done, I think. To create a different version from the fight the year prior. However, I wonder: Had Kate told him her secret, it’s possible for him to also reveal his earlier - say right after. But the fight in Always would still be a big block, because then it ISN’T dormant, and even without it still being a secret, him wanting her to stop so as to not get killed, and her unwillingness to accept that in the face of new evidence I think remain true enough to keep that fight very similar. As stated above, I think that even if Kate had told Castle that she remembered what he said at the funeral had they not been interrupted and admitted to her own feelings and even if Castle had then revealed his secret in return and they hashed it out right there in the time frame of 47 seconds, Always still would have turned pretty much the same. Just instead of it being “This is why you can’t do this, this is why you need to stand down.” it would be “you know why you cant do this, you know that you need to stand down.” Secrets or no secrets Kate was determined to go after Maddox and pretty much nothing that Castle or anyone else said would stop her because she honestly thought that this was the end. And if they are effectively in a fledgling relationship for that fight, I think that adds it’s own weight that would account for the secrets no longer being an issue - because “I’m asking you not to do this because I love you” becomes an even bigger thing to say “no” to in that case. This is a great thread. I’d add that Beckett is probably going to be in a very different state of mind during their argument if she isn’t reeling from Castle’s betrayal, if he told her earlier. And of course, it’s going to be much worse if he’d been keeping this secret while they were romantically involved. -- source link
