The Lindner Breechloading Carbine,Designed by Edward Lindner of New Hampshire in 1859, the Lindner carbine was a short and compact breechloading carbine that saw limited use during the American Civil War. Based upon the M1819 Hall rifle and the Norwegian Kammerlader rifle, the Lindner feature a hinged breech which rose 180 degrees for loading, which was usually done with a combustible paper cartridge. Being a percussion firearm, the Lindner required placement of a percussion cap on the nipple, which when struck drove a spark into the chamber which discharged the round.Only 892 of the carbines were produced; 501 to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry, and 391 to the 1st Michigan Cavalry. -- source link
