The Tiny 2mm Kolbri,Invented by an Austrian watchmaker named Franz Pfannel in 1914, the Kolibri has the honor of being the smallest functional semi automatic pistol in history, and perhaps the smallest pistol of any operating mechanism in history. Named after a specie of hummingbird, the Kolibri fired a tiny little 2.7mm cartridge called the 2mm Kolibri. With a bullet weighing only 3 grains, it produced a muzzle velocity of 650 feet per second only an energy of 3 foot pounds. In other words, the 2mm Kolibri would hit with the approximate force of a toaster falling on a 1 square foot tile at terminal velocity. Getting hit with one might hurt, but it wasn’t very deadly. The Kolibri’s barrel was un-rifled as well due to the inability to rifle such a small bore at the time. Thus, the Kolibri also suffered accuracy problems.Incredibly the Kolibri was marketed as a self defense weapon despite the fact that it couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn or pierce human flesh. However the Kolibri sold well, being purchased as an interesting novelty item rather than a legitimate weapon. Pfannel continued producing Kolibri pistols until 1938. Today they are highly sought after collectibles, with original guns selling for around $5,000 and ammunition selling for around $70 a round. -- source link
