It is NOT about nurses abusing patients or a “certain personality type” called to nursing. It’s about nurses bullying EACHOTHER because they’re put in a submissive position where they can’t complain or retaliate against the very real abuse they receive from doctors and the administration. It’s about nurses lashing out at their fellow nurses because they’re in a highly stressful work environment where they frequently don’t get enough bathroom breaks or time to eat lunch. It’s about fresh-out-of-nursing-school RNs being given enormous amounts of responsibility and being forced to work in outright unsafe conditions due to understaffing. At no point does the article state that nurses deliberately abuse patients for kicks because they’re supposedly in a position of authority; rather, patient care suffers as a trickle down effect of nurse-on-nurse abuse that causes teamwork to break down. The article even specifically mentions workplace stress arccued from belligerent, unreasonable patients and patient’s family members verbally and sometimes physically abusing nurses.This is not the type of profession you go into because you like bossing people around. Seriously. I hope everyone reblogging this know there’s absolutely nothing nurses and CNAs can do when patients mistreat and harass us. I’ve seen countless nurses, myself included, get slapped, kicked, punched, groped, sexually harassed, called slurs, and get threatened, sometimes by patients who were completely lucid. Even with elderly patients with dementia, getting choked with your own lanyard or bitten hard enough to draw blood is not a pleasant experience. I actually know nurses with permanent on the job injuries because a patient threw or knocked them over. I knew a CNA who got kicked in stomach when she was seven months pregnant. There was a patient who recorded staff on the job and tried to upload the videos on Facebook and then complained to the manager that no one brought his ice water fast enough during a code. I had a Covid positive patient rip my faceshield off and cough in my face.I’m not trying to downplay bad experiences in hospitals because I’ve experienced it from a patient perspective, but this attitude is incredibly disrespectful and ignorant. -- source link
