A member of the Blackfoot tribe lights a fire on the prairie in Alberta, 1918. The Blackfoot and other Native American groups used intentional burning for centuries to manage grasslands and forests. When the United States and Canada began to actively manage these areas, they ignored traditional techniques and prevented any and all wildfires, a policy which many think has led to larger and more destructive fires (due to the buildup of dry wood and grass after years without fire). -- source link
