Happy Labor Day! Today we celebrate the dignity of labor with a collection work by American photographer Lewis Hine who took over 700 photographs of men and women in their workplaces, from farms and mines to factories. The clean muscularity and precise industrial order presented in Power House Mechanic (1920-1921) demonstrates Hine’s shift from a gritty documentary style to what he called “interpretive photography”—an approach intended to raise the stature of industrial workers, who were increasingly diminished by the massive machinery they operated.Lewis Wickes Hine (American, 1874-1940).
