anythinggoessports: thespecializeddigest: 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with a stress fracture on my tibia and was told not to get on the bike. Zero miles. Zilch. Not even a quick ride down to the shop. That left me very, very upset. Even a little depressed. People told me it was a normal reaction, that it could be the way my body was coping to the sudden lack of exercise. Friends who have gone through similar situations gave me some suggestions of what to do to replace cycling during this period, like swimming, weight training, yoga, pilates, etc I thought a lot about all of this, but I have no desire to go to a pool if there’s no tanning or a drink involved. I have no patience to be stuck in a gym neither… The truth is I don’t ride my bike for the exercise, to stay in shape or to be healthy. Being fit is just a bonus. I ride my bike because it’s the only thing that gets me out of bed at 3:30 in the morning with a smile on my face! That being said, cycling takes so much time in my life that, initially, I didn’t know what to do with all the free time! For the first couple of days I cleaned my bike, bought cycling stuff and organized all my accessories. Later, I went back to all the things I gave up because of my cycling routine: - Staying up late to finally finish a book I had been reading forever (not easy when you go to bed everyday at 9pm to ride early in the morning) - Woke up at 11am on the weekend! <3 <3 <3 - Binge-watched Sopranos, Daredevil, Fear The Walking Dead and a lot of movies! - I went to a party! (Kind of… It was actually the Premiere of a film I worked on…but that counts, right? #Iamold) - Heard a lot of albums that I love and which were super dusty on the shelf, because I’d only been listening to cheesy frenetic hip-hop during training. - Started cooking again (I LOVE cooking)… - Got a whole lot of rest I proved to myself there’s life after injury and that it can even be fun! As everything comes to an end, today is my last day off the bike. Next week I’ll try to ride to work so I can get back on the saddle bit by bit. I’m very excited! Julia Love this woman!
