Today in History, November 16th, 1532; Atahualpa is captured by Francisco PizarroAfter the Battle of Cajamarca (which was more like a massacre), the Incan Emperor Atahualpa was captured by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. The Spanish would hold Atahualpa for ransom with the promise that he would fill a large room 22 feet long and 17 feet wide up to a height of 8 feet once with gold and twice with silver within two months. By August of 1533 the Spaniards feared the Incans would retaliate. Pizzaro staged a mock trial and convicted Atahualpa of practicing idolatry, revolting against the Spanish king, and murdering his brother Huascar (whom he had killed to gain power before the Spanish arrival). He was executed by garroting on August 29th, 1633. -- source link
