Dolls (1987)A horror film directed by Stuart Gordon (who had directed ‘Re-Animator’ from 1985 & ‘From Beyond’ from 1986, H.P Lovecraft adaptions both of which are glorious exercises in gore and they come highly recommended by me..even given their problematic elements, some of which are played for laughs). Charles Band was the producer behind ‘Dolls’ and he was also responsible for the ‘Puppetmaster’ film series (more cheaply produced killer doll movies). What you get is pure B-movie goodness.I was about 13 years of age when I originally saw this film and I remember more violence and gore but the movie is pretty tame (especially in comparison to Gordon’s previous films mentioned above). Framed like a fairy tale, you’ve got your evil stepmother, a cruel father, and a kindly elderly couple who are more than they seem (*cough* witches *cough*). Enter two hitchhiking “movie punks” (I love me some terrible movie punks) and a man who happens to be “young at heart” and you have the setting for a fable that unfolds over a dark and stormy nightwhere mean spirited people get their comeuppance. It’s a surprisingly heartfelt film involving killer dolls told from the vantage point of a child. I like to think of the movie as a short story akin to the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. It’s an unrecognized classic in the “killer dolls” genre and one of the first. It’s worth a watch. -- source link
