Recently, while browsing the catalogue for materials to include in the Libraries and Archives First Saturday Event, I discovered an exhibition catalogue for a show called 1968: Then & Now, which featured many artists familiar to our Brooklyn audiences (catch one of them tonight in a program here at the Museum!). It took place from September to December, 2008 at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.The exhibition sought to revisit an era where social movements, like the fight for civil rights, had reached new peaks. As it reflected on the previous 40 years, it examined the influence these issues had on art of the time, as well as the continued impact on contemporary works. 10 years later, the Brooklyn Museum’s Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power—now in it’s final weeks—has focused on “Black artistic practice from 1968-1983.” The discussion of our social climate becomes increasingly common, and heated, as activists continue to work towards an equitable and just world.
