cryptid-wendigo:Douglas Herrick (1920 - 2003) is credited with what the world knows as Jackalopes. The specific kind that Herrick created is called the Douglas Variant as rabbits with “antlers” (Shope papilloma virus) have been sighted as far back as the 1500s. His brother, Ralph, and he had just come home from hunting in 1932 and it spawned the now famous creature. Ralph explained, “We just throwed the dead jack rabbit in the shop when we come in and it slid on the floor right up against a pair of deer horns we had in there. It looked like that rabbit had horns on it.” Douglas quickly wanted to mount the jackrabbit and the first mounted Jackalope was born. The first Jackalope was sold for $10 to Roy Ball who mounted it on the wall of his hotel, the Bonte Hotel. Unfortunately, it was later stolen. Herrick’s home town of Douglas, Wyoming is now known as the “Home of the Jackalope”. -- source link
