prehistoric-life:Neanderthal character studies by Tom Björklund Tom Björklund’s work has always felt special to me not just because of the way it speaks to H. neanderthalensis with beauty, grace, and emotive intelligence; but also because it forcefully raises the trope of ancient humans, especially Neanderthals, as ‘other’ than us - demanding its re-evaluation through scientifically informed art. We are forced in a beautiful way to reimagine what society has told us about these ancient humans, who thought, dressed, painted, spoke, and created more intelligently and complexly than we had ever imagined. We have always been determined as humans to believe we are totally unique, painting a false trajectory of evolution to make sense of our own place in the world. Little did we know that our collective memory had erased our conception of our past selves, marginalising our old co-existing counterparts as inferior stepping stones on our alleged route to modern humanity. -- source link
