gritsinmisery:In which Joss gets a “customer_suck” right. Here’s my thing tho. (I suppose I should say up front that I’ve just never been able to love Firefly the way so many do.) Like, this particular speech/interaction is great, no question. But the whole arc of this episode is about Mal being weirdly jealous of someone he has no right to be jealous of; inserting himself into situations that have nothing to do with him; insisting on fighting Inara’s battles for her. And I just…don’t like that. (I guess I should also say that I could never bring myself to care much at all about Mal/Inara, so any mitigating feelings about luuuurve just don’t apply for me.)Like, I understand if the position I’m coming from somewhat reduces the weight of what I’m saying here, or changes your perspective because you feel differently, but…I really don’t approve of Mal’s behavior in this episode, and so the context in which this exchange happens kind of reduces its weight for me a little? Like, the fact that these are the laws of the Companions’ guild, that sex work is respected (though not by Mal, which again, GROSS), is legitimately great. But that this interaction is happening as a direct result of Mal’s unasked-for interference instead of Inara handling this in her own way really just sticks in my craw. -- source link
