CANADA, Windsor. September 2018. Steve Mull (top photo) leads a dignified traditional smudging ceremony near the spot were a man died recently from a drug overdose. A few media and a small group of people–mostly from Street Help, a homeless shelter–gather in the early evening for the event. There are several stages including dropping sacred tobacco on the site where the man died. Christine Wilson-Furlonger (white blouse), Street Help executive director, tells people about her recent discussion with the mayor about the death and other homeless people. The media then interview Steve and people slowly disperse.I have seen many of the these ceremonies but not for the dead. It is a moving ceremony. A note: all the people in the photos are aware that I was taking their photos. Steve in particular encourages me to take photos of his ceremonies. Many in his community disagree. It is indeed a rare privilege to make and publish these images. -- source link
