universitybookstore:Last week on The New Yorker’s Page-Turner Blog, writer Jon Michaud penned an appreciation on Walter M. Miller’s classic science-fiction novel, A Canticle for Leibowitz, and its continuing influence on the current trend of post-apocalyptic novels (particularly in the YA genre), TV shows, and movies. One fo this bookseller’s favorite Sci-Fi books, the novel details how humanity rebuilds civilization following a nuclear holocaust thanks to bits and pieces of technology stored away in a reliquary of a Catholic monastary; it is an unforgettable reading experience and, like all classics, stays with the reader long after the final page is turned. Despite mixed to negative reviews upon first publication (the original review in The New Yorker accused Miller of being a “dull, ashy writer guilty of heavy-weight irony”), the novel’s reputation has only increased with throughout the years and is becoming a staple in high school-level literary curricula. -- source link
