grindy-cog:See, something I never really understood, is why quite a lot of people call Steve an asshole in this scene… Like, sure, maybe it’s because I relate to that character a lot, but I didn’t take it in a mean way at all? In fact, it makes very little sense for him to be genuinely a jerk to Danny because of his claustrophobia, as he learned about it literally 2-3 episodes before this one (I think), and his reaction was a very good one; he didn’t even tease Danny, in the slightest. Sure, he was surprised as hell that he somehow missed it, or that Danno accused Steve of not paying enough attention to him (because, seriously, lol); but even if he’d be angry for that comment, nothing in the scene above suggested that Steve wasn’t serious about holding hands? And I feel for Danno, I do, but he wanted to keep Danny close; not to leave him alone there, when they didn’t know exactly what to expect. But maybe I’ve missed something♀️I think you’re spot on, and I extend Steve grace here because he is actually being very normal with Danny. Think about any banter they have about Steve driving or other Steve-hyper-active-plan. Danny expresses that he’s scared of dying, Steve assures Danny that he won’t let anything happen to him, and makes a joke about how there’s nothing to worry about. What Steve *doesn’t* know is that in THIS instance, basic reassurance can’t work because Danny is ALSO having a physiological response that he can’t control because this is a phobia and not anxiety. Something that gets highlighted in a later episode when he’s stuck in the elevator with Max’s intern/assistant (sorry can’t remember her name/role) and because she is medically trained, she could talk Danny through what his body is doing and therefore allow him to put his body’s response in proper perspective. Which is actually a big part in how you cure/lessen a phobia response in people, along with controlled exposure. But again, neither Danny nor Steve understand this. So Danny says “I’m scared.” Steve gives his regular response of “I’m right here, I won’t let you get hurt.” Which Danny rejects because Steve’s usual promise to protect him *doesn’t work for this*. Steve then tried to make a joke, thinking this is like any other thing Danny gets hyperbolic about. Danny gets mad even though Steve is actually responding the same way he usually does. Danny feels different because he’s physiologically hooked in a way he isn’t normally, but can’t explain why it’s different because he doesn’t actually know. -- source link
