historyisntboring:Archeologists in Shahr-e Sūkhté (شهرِ سوخته‎‎, “Burnt City”) in Iran found the oldest known artificial eyeball, dating back to between 2900 and 2800 BCE. The eye was found on the 10th of December 2006 by Mansour Sajadi‘s excavation team, in the tomb of a tall woman (1.82 m, much taller than most women of her time) who was between 25 to 30 years of age at the time of death.The eye is hemispherical, made of a very light bitumen paste, covered in a thin layer of gold, and engraved with an iris and gold lines patterned like sun rays or capillaries, along with parallel lines forming a diamond shape.
