Happy Birthday to Alexander Pope, born on this day (May 21) in 1688. Pope was a poet and a translator of Homer’s works. Some of his well-known writings include An Essay on Criticism (1711) and The Dunciad (1728). After he became involved in the Scriblerus Club, he was encouraged to write a new English translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey.
