As I warm up and climb past ancient redwoods, the quiet is interrupted by rhythmic breathing and the hum of my chain. I watch for the reflection of light off the eyes of a deer, coyote, or raccoon as they go about their morning rituals. For a few hours, my world will be transformed into a black and white relief. Light from the occasional car explodes off my vest and reminds the driver they are not alone on these dark roads. When the work is done, I begin the road home. 200 feet above sea, I watch the sun rise above the hills to the east transforming the shadow world where I have been at play.
