When I set out to make Percy, some of my nastiest demons were resurfacing after I felt I’d finally conquered them. It’s exhausting to keep fighting the same battles over and over, right? So I thought, what if I literally make manifest an image of a demon, who could embody all these things that cause me to suffer and instead of fighting him, I become friends with him? I could keep an eye on him, find the humor in his tricks, and no longer allow him to get the best of me. So I sat down and made a list of my most deeply rooted demons, things that have followed me around for too long….Self hate, worthlessness, worry, judgement, overthinking, fear of appearances, comparison to others, attachment, depression, anxiety, possessiveness, creating false narratives, loneliness, pain… and on the same page I sketched him out. That shit-eating grin, those gnarly fangs, and that third eye…each part came to life as I thought about where each issue arose from in my past. I’ve honestly felt better since bringing him to life. It’s been a great exercise in recognize where my mind is clinging, and what isn’t serving me. Sometimes when I notice negative feelings arising, I just look over at my sketch of him and tell him to quit being a dick‍♀️. . .
