It was originally a joke thing that someone at The Economist came up with in the 80s, where they did a currency conversion to USD of the price of a Big Mac in different countries. It has some flaws - plenty of countries in Africa and the developing world have no McDonalds and so are excluded, but it still gives a good vibe on how far your money can go in each country.
