Wendell Phillips Dabney was an accomplished musician,author, teacher, newspaper editor, civil rights leader and politicalactivist. Born in Richmond Virginia at the end of the Civil War in1865, Wendell Phillips Dabney first came to Ohio to study at Oberlin College,where he pursued his musical and literary interests. Dabney arrived inCincinnati in 1894 after operating a music studio and working as aschoolteacher in his hometown. He soon married and opened a music studiohere. It was during this time thatDabney became the first black paymaster for the city of Cincinnati, eventuallyresigning from the position for being denied fair payment. Mr. Dabney was also the first president ofCincinnati branch of the NAACP when it was established in 1915.
