On the bitterly cold week beginning December 21, 1910, anentire city block of Cincinnati’s large shoe district burned to theground. Over a dozen building weredestroyed and the Cincinnati Fire Department worked around the clock to containand control the blaze. The fire is believed to have started in the cellar of theTwinlock Building at 818 Sycamore. Itspread outwards from there to the Krippendorf-O'Neal Shoe Company, which waslocated on the southeast corner of 9th and Sycamore. From here it spread acrossthe street to the seven story Taylor-Poole Leather Company and the Cahill ShoeCompany. The frigid weather made the work more difficult for thefirefighters, and gigantic icicles formed everywhere in the ruins. Thirty-five steam engines from sevencompanies were employed in the task of containing the fire, which eventuallyconsumed dozens of buildings. Three firemen lost their lives when a wallcollapsed on them, and many more were injured. Dynamite was later employed tobring down the remaining walls.Click here to see these images in our Digital Library! -- source link
