Andries Nielen, (1850-1940) known as A. Nielen, waseulogized as a merchant, traveler and a Dutch immigrant boy who came toCincinnati seeking opportunities for success in America. He was a successful entrepreneur, first starting a business as a publisher of monthly serial magazines and lateranother company selling household products. His love of travel and photographyled him to travel around the world taking thousands of photographs. Photographsfeatured his family and home, scenic and street views and people going abouttheir daily lives around the world. Many were hand colored and published aspostcards to share with family and friends and to sell, with sayings andquotations on the back. One of his favorite quotes was the sentiment, “Thosewho have not often felt the joy of doing a kind act, have neglected much, andmost of all themselves.” (A. Nielen).
