In the holiday mood but want something to look at something classic instead of more modern iterations starring puppets? The digital library includes older editions of fiction books such as A Christmas Carol. Here are some examples from two versions from British illustrators Arthur Rackham and John Leech.A Christmas Carol isn’t the only holiday-themed story Dickens wrote. A year later, he made The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out. In it, a poor messenger is repeatedly downtrodden by the upper classes, who judge him for his inability to pay his debts and distribute meager charity like tyrants. He questions if all poor people are inherently immoral. He climbs a bell tower and meets the spirit of the bells and their goblin attendants, who reprimand him for losing faith in humanity. They say he died in the climb, and show a bleak future for everyone he left behind. As he laments what happens, he hears the bells again and wakes to a happier reality where his neighbors pitched in to help. The end of the book questions which ending was real.Curious about other historical fiction? Check out our Digital Library! -- source link
