Pearl does not smile and stroke Mayor Dewey’s ego, as many young women are socialized to do. She just up and walks away, showing children that they do not have to put up with any man’s bullshit. Sure, the character herself isn’t perfect, but in many ways she is Steven’s role model– and, by proxy, the audience’s own.
