The First Bolt Action Repeating Rifle — The Jarmann M1884Originally created in 1881, the Jarmann Model 1884 was a magazine fed bolt action repeating rifle that was adopted by Norway in 1884. Unlike other bolt actions of the day, this rifle had a tubular magazine located below the barrel. Other bolt actions of the day were single shot breechloaders. Originally the Jarmann was a single shot rifle. Then in 1881 its designer Jacob Smith Jarmann, had the brilliant idea of adding a tubular magazine like that of the Winchester Lever Action in the United States. The magazine held 8 rounds of 12mm black powder cartridges, giving Norwegian soldiers a great advantage over other military’s which mostly still used single shot rifles. Most other countries would adopt repeating rifles in the 1890’s. Interestingly the Jarmann has a selector switch on the left side of the barrel, which when turned activates a magazine cutoff, turning the rifle into a single shot firearm. Around 30,000 were produced, many of them being refurbished into hunting rifles with the Adoption of the Krag-Jorgensen in the 1890’s. Others were rebuilt into harpoon guns and exported to other countries. Today they are very rare rifles. -- source link
