Portraiture was a service that was once reserved for people of wealthy or royal status. It later evolved and became more accessible as a means of capturing one’s essence, preserving age, style, character, and time itself with the stroke of a brush or the click of a camera. Artists of the Black power movement used portraiture as a means of controlling their own narrative and increasing Black representation in a eurocentric world.
