“I wanted to have the experience of bringing more teens into a museum and see them be themselves without being monitored by adults. It was a safe space for them and all their friends; where they can let themselves go for a couple of hours,” says Senior Teen Night Planning Committee member, Teresa, 16. The Teen Night Planning Committee is a paid internship in which NYC teens produce BkM Teen Nights–free events inspired by our special exhibitions. Every year a team is selected to work collaboratively to dream up, organize, andpromote live music, workshops, food, and fun.Last year we produced 3 teen nights Basqui Who? Basqui That?, Currents & Bolts, and ¡Libérate! based on our most exciting exhibitions. We got to work with amazing performers, poets, activists, DJs and community leaders and expand our knowledge on an array of topics, from mental health, gender fluidity to the representation of Brooklyn. We are passionate about using our Teen Nights as a way to discuss relevant topics, build a creative environment and celebrate ourselves & each other. Senior Teen Night Planning Committee member, Dashawn, 17, says “I honestly want to thank Brooklyn Museum for the education they have given me. Coming into this program I had no idea what feminism really was, the importance of identity as well as the incorporation of social justice into art. As I went through the program my knowledge grew and expanded to a point where now I can have strong conversations on these issues and topics.”Applications are now open for our 2018-2019 season of Teen Night Planning Committee!
